The Holden Prayer /// Archival Print
Holden Village is a remote Lutheran retreat center in Chelan, Washington deep in the Cascade Mountains. Using ink and watercolor I illustrated "The Holden Prayer" using imagery from around the village. The illustrations highlights a range of seasons: a snow covered cabin with smoke curling from a chimney, the fireweed plant that springs up around the village, the iconic view of Copper Peak and Buckskin Mountain from the village, lodgepole pine cones, often serotinous meaning only fire will trigger their opening and a pine tree with wild light glowing beyond it.
More information about the prayer provided by Nancy Winder:
The Call of Abraham was the title The Rev. Eric Milner-White gave to this beloved prayer, published in a little book, Daily Prayer (Oxford, 1941). This prayer found a home in the prayer section of the Lutheran Service Book and Hymnal (1958), and was used regularly at Holden Village from its beginning in 1962. “We will now pray Prayer 96 on p. 231.” Villagers took this prayer with them to their homes and congregations, and its wide use from Holden led to its inclusion in the concluding prayers of Morning and Evening Prayer in both the Lutheran Book of Worship (1978) and Evangelical Worship (2006). As the use of this prayer is unique to Holden Village, we title it The Holden Prayer.
