Upper Railroad Creek Valley Map
Illustrated at Holden Village in Chelan, Washington
Railroad Creek Valley is one of many valleys in the North Cascade that flow into Lake Chelan, Washington's 50 mile long super deep fjord lake. It is very remote, with no roads in or out. Holden Village is a former copper mine active in the 30s-50s. It's now a Lutheran retreat center open to all who are willing to travel there by boat and by foot! It boasts pristine wilderness and an extensive trail system, including the nearby Pacific Crest Trail and close proximity to Glacier Peak Wilderness and Stehekin.
This is one of the most challenging and rewarding illustrations I've worked on. The imagined "three-quarters" perspective made my brain work on overdrive. Several Holden Village staff members, who have extensively hiked the valley, helped guide this illustration and insure accuracy. I used watercolor to add natural color to the map.
